On making the first mince pies of the season (or ever)

I don’t remember the last time I waited until this close to Christmas to start making mince pies…

Last night, a friend came over. She’s German and had never even heard of mince pies, let alone thought about making one. That obviously had to be rectified. Here’s the process of rectification:

Pre-rolled puff pastry. It was supposed to be specially amazing with extra butter, but it was sticky and soft and just generally hard to work with – next time I’ll stick to the usual stuff 🙂
Normal sized tray – miniature moulds
6 rolls of puff pastry later there was still mince meat left in the first of 6 litre-tubs…
No way I’m going to faff about with a pastry brush – I dunk the lids in a mixture of milk and beaten egg, push one side into the top of a pile of sugar and hope they land sugar side up when I throw them towards the cases…
The first plateful (proper sized) – mostly straight out of the oven

🙂 🙂 🙂 I think she done good 🙂 🙂 🙂

    1. Not that many – a roll isn’t enough to make a whole tray – I think 3 trays of 12 normal sized and a tray of 24 small ones…
There’s not much chance of any lasting until Christmas anyway – the small ones went to work with DB, and to his mum’s Christmas do, I’ve brought the rest to work, where my colleague is making serious inroads… I think he breathed 5 in for his second breakfast (after devouring about a 1/3 of a loaf of sandwiches…). Second breakfast is the one you have when you get to work as opposed to first breakfast which you have when you get up.

      1. I lied. It was only 5 rolls. I found one in the fridge this morning, and we only bought 6…. One day I’ll be capable of counting all the way up to 6 without mistakes… 😉

    1. 🙂 🙂 🙂 thank you 🙂 They’re ok – I let the mincemeat cook too long (back in November) so they’re not quite as good as I wanted them to be.. not that anyone else here’s noticed 😉

(see above for how many it made)
