On sleep and buttermilk

I went back to the doctor (a week after being prescribed iron tablets) because I had no energy – less than before – severe constipation and was falling asleep at work.

A quick urine test later and I was written off work for a week, prescribed antibiotics and told to see a kidney specialist for an ultrasound.

My work-free week went hand-in-hand with instructions to rest, sleep as much as my body wanted, drink lots of water and eat ‘light food’. No drafts. No swimming. Nothing physically strenuous allowed.

She also recommended I drink half a litre of buttermilk every evening before bed and take ‘stomach-soothing-medicine’ before meals.

Oh yeah, and to give the iron tablets a break.

    1. Thank you! πŸ™‚

I’m supposed to start taking them again, just every three days instead of every day.. maybe that’ll help build up iron reserves without the side effects. What I don’t understand is why no one’s come up with an alternative, since practically everyone who’s had anything to do with iron tablets has had problems.

  1. Sounds like you have a definite case of the ick. Sorry to hear you are feeling so unwell! I had never heard of drinking buttermilk to relieve constipation — as I recall it tastes fairly nasty by itself? I hope you are able to get more rest on your week off. Dr. Rose’s recommendations — don’t push yourself too hard, just do what you can. Feel better soon! ((hugs))

    1. πŸ™‚ The buttermilk is supposed to restock the intestines/stomach/gut/digestive system/??? with the good bacteria you need to digest food properly. I don’t much like it plain, but there are flavoured versions available here. They have a crazy amount of sugar in though.. Can’t have everything I guess πŸ˜‰
