On getting unangry

Getting angry is easy.

Getting unangry isn’t. At least, I don’t think it is.

Yesterday was an angry day. (And I also didn’t post, so this is a catch up).

I asked three people what they do to get rid of their own anger and all three of them said they listen to loud music. One added that if it doesn’t work, they listen to more music (and/or more loudly). Additionally, one suggested screaming and one admitted to driving very fast.

I tend to want to hit things. I don’t actually hit them – I need my hands uninjured – but the wanting is still there. I also tend to cry. The sort that is uncontrolled and hot and loud and results in puffy eyes and an entire binload of used tissues.

Yesterday I went for music instead. It’s not the first time I’ve listened to music when angry, but it was probably the first time I have done so purposefully, with getting rid of my anger the only motivation.

It helped. I probably need a couple more doses 😉 but I am, a day/night and several hours of loud music later, down to a level of anger that isn’t, probably, going to involve injury to myself, anyone or anything else.

Who knows. Maybe I’ll find something creative to do with all this imbalanced energy soon.

In the meantime I will prescribe myself another dose of the Dixie Chicks’ “not ready to make nice (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=IHH8bfPhusM) at full computer-speaker-volume in the workshop.

Luckily my colleague is on holiday 🙂 🙂 🙂

  1. Yeah, music can help. Maybe you need to make something large and pointy, with a propensity for ugliness and inflicting grievous bodily hurt on others to get it out of your system. 🙂
OR, maybe you can make something horrid in glass and them smash it satisfyingly whilst willing all your anger into it.
Anyway, hope whatever it was that made you angry goes away and doesn’t cause it again.

    1. 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

Is poking people with ugly pointy objects better than punching them? 😉

The worst part of it all, is that the glass knows when I’m angry and won’t do what it’s told (like small children…). That means everything I make is horrid and ugly even when it’s not supposed to be..

I hope so too, but it can’t hurt for you to hope as well – the more the merrier (or unangrier maybe) :). I’ve written a long, mostly neutral-but-still-passive-aggressively-pissed-off, email to the offending parties and feel at least a bit better for it.. We shall see what happens.

I might go and smash some glass in the meantime though! 🙂

  2. I don’t suppose you have a garden do you? Viciously pulling weeds or doing some therapeutic pruning is very good! I also recommend a long walk where you can talk aloud to yourself-or the person/thing, or whatever it is that has made you angry. If you are a believing person prayer is a wonderful anger-releaser. I don’t get angry very often, but I don’t like the feeling when I do so, I hope you get rid of it soon. Will be glad to know how you are doing with it.

    1. I do have a garden, and I also have a lot of weeds 🙂

I don’t have a lot of daylight to deal with them though 🙁 When I get home it’s dark.. If I’m still mad at the weekend I’ll give that a go 🙂 I probably ought to do it anyway – the place is beginning to look like noone lives there! (or like the wicked fairy’s paid a visit).

I don’t get angry very quickly.. until I do and then I get very angry – and bite back. The build up takes a while. It would probably be healthier to get a little bit angry more often, or find some way to block the effects of stupid people out of my life… Probably praying more would help too :S One guy suggested shoulding at God, but since it’s not his fault I don’t see why that would help… 😉

  3. Yes, He doesn’t usually cause our frustrations and anger.
I guess it’s healthy to get angry when there’s a just cause, but it’s how we let the anger affect us that can become the problem I suppose. I hope it seeps out the end of your fingers and toes soon and leaves you feeling better inside.
If we can’t do anything about what makes us angry then we are probably wasting our energy on being angry, and whoever or whatever has made us feel like that, is just going blithely on their way totally unaffected!
So “don’t allow others to dictate your feelings” is good advice but often hard to apply.
I remember teaching a class of youngsters once about anger and I tried to impress on them to “be an actor not a reactor”.
I’m not in any way making light of your feelings, and truly do feel for you carrying that anger around inside yourself. I hope to hear its gone with the weeds soon!

  4. I feel the same, I listen to skrillex, pretty reckless, bmth, slipknot, five finger death punch kind of stuff when I’m angry xP I also find watching a fave tv show takes my mind off, or I vent draw/write 🙂

    1. You’re new! Welcome to my world 🙂 I’m out of cake but I might have a biscuit or two somewhere..

I’m not into much of your music (unless I’m even angrier than I was on Monday and that luckily doesn’t happen often), but loud music is certainly helpful! And writing too. I don’t think I’ve ever drawn my anger away, but I will bear it in mind for next time 🙂
